About Kindness Cures

The Kindness Cures movement was started by Kelsey Carignan.  At 32, she was diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer.  She asked for nothing other than kindness.  

All she wanted was to see the happy in the world.  She asked her tribe to go record themselves doing acts of kindness and to post in with the tag #KindnessCures so that she could feel love while she was at her Chemo infusions.

Derek Strokon has always been a strong cancer support advocate.  From volunteering with the Canadian Cancer Society, being part of the Movember Foundation organizing committee, and establishing Give Cancer The Finger, as a not-for-profit society. 

Kelsey and Derek met on the TEDx stage in 2023 and quickly knew that aligning purpose by changing the foundation to Kindness Cures would allow for greater impact.

"The heaviest part of cancer is who I can't be to the people I love"  This drives home that the impact of cancer doesn't end at the physical.  The emotional toll of not being who you were before diagnosis, not being able to finish simple projects or keep the home in order is a stark reminder of the journey that you are on.

Kindness Cures partners with local business and community, and other cancer foundations to help restore as much as normal as we can to families fighting the battle they never chose.  Be it getting a local company to come help finish a kitchen reno, do laundry, fill the fridge with meals, or help create memories by sending families camping or to a soccer game, we do everything that we can to make things a little easier.

We do our best to help every nominated family.  We do not have eligibility criteria other than finding those afflicted by cancer who need help.

Our impact team is based on the West Coast of Canada, but that doesn't mean it's where we stop.  If there's a need, we will do our best to find a way to help.

Our greatest support comes from the love of local businesses and communities who roll up their sleeves, and donate their products and services, to help families and individuals in their local areas.  Without this, we couldn't do anything.  We help coordinate from our end, and then deploy the kindness soldiers directly to patients.

Corporately, we are dominantly funded by Fortiva Medical.  Fortiva's core belief is that every cancer journey deserves kindness, dignity, and the freedom to be human, and keeping the patient at the forefront of cancer treatment is embodied in their business.

Generosity from other businesses and community members keeps us going.  We are so grateful for all the direct donations to Kindness Cures that help fund our impact.  Whether it's $5 or $500,000, every dollar is used with the purpose of helping level the playing field for those who were dealt a hand they never asked for.  All donations are adjudicated by the Veritas Foundation.
